The Kenai Peninsula
The Kenai River is famous for producing the biggest King Salmon in the world.
This river currently holds the world record for King Salmon (97lbs 4oz) and every year
produces fish over 80 lbs.Having two runs of salmon, our season begins June 1 and
usually ends July 31st. The first run begins the last two weeks of May and winds
down towards the end of June. The fishing then is usually less crowded and can be
very productive. On average these fish are smaller than the second run with the average
fish weighing in at 35lbs with some 50 and 60 pounders being caught. You can also
fish for sockeye in June and July, rainbows and dolly varden throughout the year,
and halibut fishing in Homer, May-August. The second run King Salmon are what the
trophy hunters are after. This run takes place throughout the month of July. These
fish usually average 45lbs.This is when the majority of the true Alaskan trophys
are caught. The Kenai River has two runs of silver salmon, with a first run that
arrives in August. The second run kicks off in September and will end as the month
winds down. The average size for silver salmon for both rivers is 10-15lbs with
occasional 18 and 20 pounders.
